Talking Twitter Blues [May. 31st, 2009|11:01 pm]
Recorded finally:

http://vonflueart.com/music/Talking%20Twitter%20Blues.mp3

Probably should have recorded with banjo, or guitar, instead of the tenor. Seems too thin... Oh well, save it for the record!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

World Premiere of THE KIDS OF WIDNEY HIGH comic book!

Live Performance by The Kids of Widney High

All of the artists of the comic will be signing along with the band!

FRIDAY, JUNE 5th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Comic Bug, 1807 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

After months of anticipation, The Kids of Widney High comic is finally hitting the streets! Written entirely by the members of The Kids of Widney High and illustrated by some of the comic book industry's top talent, this gorgeous 36 page book is a milestone event in both rock n' roll history and comic book history!

"This wasn't some occasion where a celebrity rock band casually said 'oh, we'd like you to make a comic book," said editor/publisher Mike Wellman. "The Kids of Widney High were hands on from the very beginning, telling the stories they wanted to tell." Every word of dialogue in the book was taken from extensive interview sessions with the eight members of the rock band and then compiled into a story of adventure and triumph.

A handful of very talented artists contributed to the book including: Robbi (Maintenance) Rodriguez, Rafael (Sonambulo) Navarro, Rikki (The Monacle and Jimmy Specs) Niehaus, Chuck (Black Metal) B.B., Neal (Negative Burn) Von Flue, Chris (Bainst) Brandt, and cover art by Jim Mahfood.

All of the artists will be present for Friday's signing and some of them will participate in a live art show during the performance by The Kids of Widney High.

"Comic books are the only print media capable of capturing the energy of rock n' roll outside of a gig poster," said Wellman. "This event is going to bring it all to life for the folks to see!"

The signing/performance is free for all ages. Refreshments will be served and the artists will be selling select pieces of original artwork.

Woodscrews [May. 3rd, 2009|11:01 pm]
Keeping in the tradition of only posting songs round here, (at the blistering snail's pace they come in) here's a new one, 5 months early for Halloween:

http://vonflueart.com/stuff/Woodscrews.mp3

Lyrics:

Woodscrews, buttons and dinosaur bones
whistles, wooden swords and little round stones
pirate coins stolen from old Davey Jones
that's what you'll find in a boy's room

Baseballs, popguns and whittled-down sticks
gum wrappers, robots, and a piece of a brick
a book that will teach you 100 card tricks
that's what you'll find in a boy's room

a rocking chair that looks like a troll in low light
lassos that could bind a boy up real tight
dark shadows in the corners conceal spiders that bite
that what you'll find in a boy's room

there's a closet that's a doorway to permit the undead
and dust bunnies with two rows of teeth in their head
and tentacles that slide out from under the bed
that's what you'll find in a boy's room

the toy-chest spews a cloud of poison that spreads
and a vaporous bride that murders all who she weds
with a bookcase that bleeds out a thick shade of red

and 100 other things that will fill you with dread (x2)
That's what you'll find in a boy's room.

working on riding that wave of popularity. [Mar. 5th, 2009|08:11 am]
We're breaking up LJ. Facebook is my new girlfriend. Watch us kiss at a dirty table in the food court, and be jealous. I can still be your friends page though, right?

'Course in my absence I wrote a song about the Watchmen, so it's all good. Wierd co-inky-dink that I finished it right when the movie is coming out!

Enjoy it! And tell yer girlfriends!

Here's a version of Joe Purdy's "Cowboy Song". It kinda jumped up and bit me today, so i figured I'd record it:

Sweeping up after the partys over [Jan. 27th, 2009|07:48 am]
Worked up a new song the other day and [info]fabricari has emboldened me enough to try and throw down a rough version, in the interest of trying to post at least once a week here you go:

(Ignore my rambling at the beginning and the sharp edges, I should smooth them off after playing it for a few weeks)

So [info]tymmi  just finished his comic "!". Not only has it got a great title, but it's probably the best webcomic I've seen in recent memory (admittedly i don't read Penney Arcade or um that one the other guy does...) Here's a swipe at Tym's monster, who is pretty much the only thing I feel for, by the end...READ IT!

the Von Flues storm Facebook [Jan. 6th, 2009|07:46 am]
I've been spending more time on teh olde facebook lately (Profile found here) I resisted FB for a long time cause all I ever saw there was people I went to high school with. And really, I see them at the market every week so, what's the point? But either i'm getting older or Facebook is getting better.

We also have a studio page where my better half and I will attempt to send out regular updates on what we're doing, which this week entails the painting and firing of many ceramic platters, doing some decorative finishes in a theatre lobby and a big ol' mural on a car wash (ah the life of a sellout? working artist). So friend it all, we'll keep making more.

The comprehensive ocean of my business... [Dec. 15th, 2008|09:30 pm]

These guys played at one of my favorite bars the other night but I didn't go on account of I was at the Old Town Music Hall. I'm regretting it now though, the more I listen to their CD.

Did you know that you can make a new nib for your wacom pen with a toothpick? Neither did I, till i tried it. And it worked well (you just gotta sand it down a bit till it fits snug). They wear out fairly quick, but it's a good cover while you're waiting for replacements.

Went to the Old town Music Hall tonight:

Saw some great old film, including some Laurel and Hardy and the 1927 version of "Scrooge". It's amazing how your forget there is a person playing the wurlitzer organ while you watch, we're so used to taking sound for granted while watching movies. I'm ashamed to admit I've only been there twice in the last 10 years, I should go every week. One of my strongest movie memories was seeing "Wings" there when I was a kid. I remember crying my eyes out in the theater and was so affected by a pilot's death scene that to this day, while brushing my teeth, I like to pretend I've been fatally shot by my best friend after stealing an enemy plane, and I spit the tooth paste all over like blood.

Man, with memories like that, it's no wonder that I have arrested development for a time 50 years before I was born.

Christmas in Prison [Dec. 9th, 2008|11:14 pm]
My thought was to do a small CD for x-mas gifts. Just in case I never get the others done, here's a rough version of the John Prine song:

Merry Christmas, every one!

Just got back from seeing The Decemberists, who were fantastic. Probably better than that last time we saw them, which was right around the time they had signed to Capitol. Amazing live versions of the Crane Wife material, Especially Crane Wife 1&2, which is over 10 minutes long and involved some guitar juggling. Chris Funk even played a Hurdy Gurdy, which made me jealous. I'd love a Hurdy Gurdy.

I was really impressed with the opening act, Loch Lomond, who gave an overall impression of being a group of artful band geeks turned loose in a freak folk show. Really beautiful music, somewhere between Norfolk and Western and The Decemberists themselves. Fantastic harmonies (although when you have 7 members all singing at once, I imagine that it can't help but sound heavenly). I loved how they each traded and switched instruments through the set. As near I could tell, the lead singer and violinist were the only two who didn't play at least 3 different instruments by the end.

I play so much music as a hobbyist, (albiet with people much more talented than myself) that I forget how cool it is too see professionals do it. It's heartening and encouraging to see (and understand somewhat) the things the are happening on stage, but to be moved along by the quality and ease in which it's being done.
