For a long time, I've had a goal of making a set of short flyers or one-sheets about the history of my town. For those that don't know, my family has been here for going on 5 generations now, and I often see new people moving here who probably aren't totally aware of what makes this town unique and interesting. I also feel like I have a somewhat different paradigm of the place, it's inhabitants and geography, and I thought this would be a good way to share my understanding of the place I live.
I've started with the event that made this town more or less, Standard Oil's second west coast refinery being put here in 1911:
This is my computer mock up, next I'll print it out and redraw the whole thing (text included) on some bristol. I figure this'll help me hone some chops that I sorely need, and keep it looking fresh and natural.
I'm gonna backtrack a bit next and get into the original native people of the area and the Spanish land grants and various titles and buying and selling that ended it up in Standard Oil's hands. Then it's a (more or less) chronological romp into the area, including the birth of LAX, the earning of our moniker as the "aerospace capitol of the world" and how our swim coach led a group of young men to the Olympic gold medal in Helsinki. |
