Lynch did make a comic for a while, actually.
So i got the beginnings of an idea for a new comic last night. This should be fairly surprising as I haven't really made a new comic in ages, and especially a comic like this.
I don't know about the rest of you but I've been noticing for a while that experimentation in webcomics is at an all-time low. Like, almost as low as it was BEFORE webcomics were created. People have, in a way, drawn their lines, camps have been formed, and webcomics are fitting into a particular mold, both in form and function. I imagine that a young person looking to start up a webcomic now thinks there is a formula. And for someone like me that would be very confusing and limiting. Being told and assuming that webcomics is a world of possibilities, yet looking around and seeing virtually nothing that is different. There's not enough diversity for me.
I've also be reading David Lynch's Catching The Big Fish, and besides being a massive advertisement for Transcendental Meditation, it's a pretty good explanation of his working method. And in a way it's a bit of a vindication for me as it's shockingly similar to the way I prefer to work. A sort of combination of influence, confluence, and just keeping your eyes open and focused while you work. It's a sort of sculpting; slapping on pieces and then scraping away the parts that don't work, making your way by feel and intuition, not adhering to anything linear, or bigger than the work itself.
This kind of working method isn't reflected well in comics, and it's reflected even more miserably in webcomics.
So for the influence part of this new webcomic, I'd like you to give me five words. All of you, any of you, one of you. Just give me five words.
